Birth year watches
Watches made in 1971.
Rolex introduced the Explorer II in 1971, with a fixed 24 hour bezel and an orange hand, made for cavers who could lose track of whether it was day or night outside. It is one of the few genuinely purposeful watches of the decade.
Watches from 1971 are usually still mechanical, and often larger and squarer than what came before. The seventies had begun in earnest.
