What does the "5" in Seiko 5 mean?
It refers to five features built into the original design: automatic winding, a day-date display in one window, water resistance, a recessed crown at 4 o'clock, and a durable case and bracelet. Every genuine Seiko 5 carries all five.
Is a Seiko 5 automatic or battery-powered?
Automatic. It winds itself from the motion of your wrist and needs no battery. Worn daily it should run continuously; left off the wrist for a day or two it will stop and simply needs the time reset.
How can I tell how old my Seiko 5 is?
The case back carries a reference number and a serial code. On most vintage Seiko 5 calibres, the first digit of the serial gives the year and the second gives the month. We read and note this wherever the case back is legible.
Is a Seiko dive watch the same as a Seiko 5?
No. Some Seiko divers share a calibre family with the Seiko 5 but were designed and sold as dedicated dive watches, not as day-date automatics. We keep the two lines separate, so our Seiko 5 collection contains genuine Seiko 5s only.
