Ana-digi, short for analogue-digital, describes a watch with conventional hands on a dial and a small LCD display window built into the same face, usually showing a second time zone, a day-date or a stopwatch function. It gives a watch the classic look of hands and the extra functions of a digital module, without asking the wearer to choose between them.
The Seiko and Casio approaches
Seiko's H448-5000 pairs analogue hands with an LCD window as part of its wider multi-function LCD family, and its E029-5540 does the same in a rectangular ladies' case. Casio took the format in a tougher direction: the GA-110, GA-110C, GMA-S110MP, GW-1500A and Wave Ceptor WVA-430U in this collection all set analogue hands over a digital module built for durability, the approach that became the G-Shock. Citizen's C480 shows a third take on the same idea, an analogue dial with a digital window built into a dressier case.
Why the format keeps returning
