The quartz revolution

1970s

The introduction of quartz technology with Seiko's Astron in 1969 transformed the industry permanently. The 1970s produced both the last great Swiss automatics — made with the knowledge that quartz was coming — and the first generation of Japanese quartz watches, now highly collectible in their own right. It is also the decade of bold integrated bracelet designs, angular cases, and the rise of fashion watches.
