Seiko fitted its Magic Lever winding system to the Gyro Marvel in 1959, a small piece of engineering that made automatic winding far more efficient and which Seiko still uses. Japanese watchmaking stopped following at around this point and started competing.
A 1959 watch sits right at the end of the decade's quiet style. Slim, restrained, and usually gold-toned, with the sports watch revolution just about to arrive.
