The Rolex Day-Date arrived in 1956, the first wristwatch to spell out the day of the week in full, and it fixed the idea of the precious metal watch as a statement rather than simply jewellery.
Away from that, 1956 was a strong year for the honest Swiss dress watch. Certina, Tissot and Longines were all making pieces at this point that were built properly and priced for people who worked for a living.
