The Rolex Submariner appeared publicly at Basel in 1954, and the diving watch stopped being a specialist tool and started becoming a design language. Steel sports cases grew slowly more common from this point on.
Most 1954 watches are still dress watches, though, and that is where the value sits today. A gold-capped Swiss piece from this year costs a fraction of what its steel sports contemporaries do, and it has aged just as well.
