1953 gave the world the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, built for French naval divers, and with it the template that every dive watch has followed since: a rotating bezel, a legible dial, and real water resistance.

That was the exception. A watch made in 1953 for ordinary use was still a modest, manually wound piece, and the ones that survive in good order tend to be the ones that were looked after rather than the ones that were expensive.
