Panerai was bought by what became Richemont in 1997 and turned from an obscure Italian military supplier into one of the most recognisable brands in watchmaking. Large watches got a great deal larger afterwards.
Ordinary 1997 watches sit right before that shift. Sensibly sized, well built, and much better value than what followed.
