Watchmaking in the 1940s

The 1940s were dominated by the Second World War, and watchmaking bent to its demands. Military contracts shaped much of what was produced, with an emphasis on legibility, reliability and toughness rather than decoration.

Civilian production was sharply reduced during the war years, which makes many 1940s watches relatively scarce today. As the decade closed, the industry began the shift back to civilian life and the elegance that would define the 1950s.
