Vintage watches for Canadian collectors: what CA$500 to CA$1,000 buys from London

Canada's vintage watch supply is thin and overseas purchases arrive with a border invoice. Here is what the London market offers in Canadian dollars, what the price includes, and what to budget for at the border.

Canadian collectors are used to two frustrations: a small domestic market where good vintage pieces are snapped up quickly, and overseas purchases that arrive with a courier brokerage invoice for GST, duty and a handling fee. The first problem is solved by buying from a market with more supply. The second cannot be made to vanish, but it can be made predictable.

The customs part, in plain words

Prices on this site for Canadian visitors are shown in Canadian dollars and include tracked, insured shipping from London. They do not include Canadian import duty, GST or HST, or the carrier's brokerage fee. Those are assessed at the border on the declared value of the watch and collected before delivery. We describe every item accurately and declare the true sale value, which keeps clearance quick and avoids the inflated assessments that follow a vague declaration.

Budget for those charges before you order rather than being surprised by the invoice. If you would like a rough figure for a specific watch, ask.

Under CA$500

This is Seiko territory and it is very good territory. A 1970s or 1980s Seiko 5 automatic, a cushion-cased sports model or an early quartz piece will usually land well inside the budget with shipping included. These are watches built for daily wear with movements that any competent Canadian watchmaker can service.

Swiss quartz from the 1980s and 1990s also sits here: Tissot, Certina and Raymond Weil dress pieces, and Gucci's Swiss-made fashion watches, which have aged far better than their reputation suggests.

Under CA$1,000

Doubling the budget opens the door to 1960s and 1970s Swiss automatics. Tissot Seastars and Certina automatics from the period when both were in the same industrial group as Omega are the standouts: proper mechanical watches with slim cases and honest finishing. Occasionally an Omega or a Longines appears at the top of this bracket, and those tend to go quickly.

Delivery and returns

Orders placed before 2pm London time on a business day usually leave the same day, fully tracked and insured. Typical delivery to Canada is five to ten business days from dispatch, with customs processing sometimes adding a little. A 14-day returns window applies from the day of delivery, and every watch is tested and photographed in natural light before listing so that a return should rarely be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Will I pay duty and GST on a watch shipped from the UK to Canada?

Usually yes. Canadian import duty, GST or HST and a carrier brokerage fee are assessed by Canada Border Services on the value of the watch and collected before delivery. They are not included in the Canadian-dollar price shown, which covers the watch and tracked, insured shipping.
