What to check on a vintage men's watch

Start with the movement and the dial, in that order, because those are the two things that are difficult or expensive to put right. A mechanical watch that runs, winds smoothly and keeps reasonable time is in fundamentally sound order even if the case shows wear, whereas a beautiful case wrapped around a movement that needs rebuilding is a project rather than a purchase.

Cases and crystals are the forgiving part. Crystals can be replaced, light scratches polish out, and honest wear on a forty-year-old watch is part of what it is. What we will not do is polish a case so hard that the original lines soften, because a case with its edges intact is worth more than one buffed smooth.

Sizes, and why the old ones are smaller

Men's watches from the 1950s to the 1980s typically measure between 33mm and 38mm, against the 40mm to 44mm that became normal in the 2000s. If you have only worn modern watches, the first vintage piece on the wrist reads as noticeably more restrained, and most people find that is exactly the appeal once they have worn it a week.

The other reason it matters is proportion. A 36mm case with slim lugs and a thin bezel often presents a larger dial than a modern 40mm watch with a thick bezel, so the case measurement alone will not tell you how a watch reads on the wrist. The listing states the case size for every piece, and we are happy to check lug-to-lug on any of them.

Where the value sits

Seiko is the natural starting point and the deepest part of this collection: movements made in-house, enormous variety of references, and prices that still reward patience rather than punishing it. Tissot, Oris and Bulova cover the Swiss and American mid-range with the same honesty, and Junghans brings a distinctly German restraint to the same decades.

If you would rather browse by budget than by brand, the under £200 and under £500 collections cut across all of it, and both are worth a look before you settle on a name.

Frequently asked questions

What size vintage watch should I buy?

Most men's watches here fall between 33mm and 38mm. If you normally wear a modern 40mm watch, a 36mm vintage case will feel smaller at first but usually settles quickly. Every listing states the case size, and we can measure lug-to-lug on request, which is the figure that really decides fit.

Is a vintage watch accurate enough to rely on?

A serviced mechanical watch from this era will typically keep time to within a minute or so a day, which is fine for everyday use though not the standard of a modern quartz piece. Vintage quartz watches are accurate to a few seconds a month. We describe how each watch is running when we list it.

Do I need to have it serviced straight away?

Not usually. Every watch is checked, wound and timed before listing, and we say what state the movement is in. If a piece would benefit from a service in the near future we tell you in the listing rather than leaving you to discover it.

Can I swap the strap?

On most watches, yes, and the listing gives the lug width so you can buy the right size. A few pieces have integrated bracelets that are part of the case design and cannot sensibly be changed; where that is so, we say it.
