What the Gucci 8900L is
The 8900L is the ladies' version of Gucci's 1990s two-tone round watch, about 26mm across, with a white or silver dial, a date window and a steel and gold-tone bracelet. The men's counterpart is the 8900M at 35 to 39mm. Both are Swiss quartz and both are among the most wearable vintage Gucci designs: an ordinary, well-made dress watch that happens to carry the name.
What the Gucci 8900M is
The 8900M is Gucci's 1990s men's two-tone dress watch: a round steel case of 35 to 39mm with gold-tone bezel and bracelet centres, a white, grey or black dial and a date window, on a Swiss quartz movement. It is one of the few vintage Gucci references made for men in any number, and examples with the original box and papers do turn up. The ladies' 8900L is the same design at 26mm.
What to check on a vintage Gucci
Gucci's watches of the 1980s and 1990s were made in Switzerland by specialist partners, so the first thing to look for is the case-back: the reference number, "Swiss made" and a serial should all be stamped cleanly, not printed. Plating wears first on the bangle hinge, the case edges and the bracelet clasp, so look there for brassing before anywhere else. Dials should be crisp with even printing; a smudged logo or misaligned index is a warning sign.
